I’ve competed, coached, and refereed in a number of combat arts over the decades at amateur level, starting with judo in 1979. While in the US Army for thirty years, I had to back off from competing because not getting injured was very important to my career. Now, I am a totally disabled, retired veteran, and have a wonderful wife who rides my butt about not getting injured. We’ve been married since 1983; I listen to her. I’m a highly functional disabled “old” guy, and I would like to remain that way. Rolling with world-class fighters at the club over the years has been sufficient to satisfy my need to test myself. I also have rank in judo, classical jujutsu, karate, and a weapons art utilizing the walking cane. Additionally, I’m a certified Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP) instructor. I have taught seminars around the US over the years, with a strong emphasis on self defense and personal combat. I have also taught handgun combat marksmanship at local ranges, and I have run many ranges for various weapons while in the Army. BJJ is my passion. Professor William Murphy is not only a good friend, but also the best instructor I have ever had. I cannot say enough about him. His personal story is an inspiration to myself and many, many others. I am a cage-side judge for the MMA venue United Cage Fights out of Cape Coral, FL. I hope to become involved with other venues after we get through the pandemic. In my spare time I putter around my shop making various self-defense weapons, such as a proprietary design for the walking cane. My canes are great, not only for whacking bad people with them, but also for trapping, joint-locking, “neck restraint holds,” and takedowns. I teach self-defense with the walking cane, and have been featured on local television in the Tampa Bay Area doing so. In addition to my Army career, I moonlighted as a high-risk security consultant for about fifteen years. This involved working extremely violent, Hispanic gang-infested nightclubs, bars, and special venues; deadly force incidents were too common. I also have performed executive protection services nationally and internationally, including Southeast Asia. This has significantly impacted my approach to self-defense and personal combat.
