So my professor came to my country from Brazil and promoted me to 1st degree a year ahead. I had no clue this was gonna happen. I just wanted to put a camp together for and promote a few of my students, among them one black belt. He ended up promoting me to first degree a year ahead because it was important for him to do it in person as it will likely be another two years before we see each other again. Do I update my rank now or do wait another year until it’s legit?
"Do I update my rank now or do wait another year until it’s legit?"
Very good question. Fwiw, I've seen folks on here getting reverified after having been promoted early.
Personally, I would hold off on registering the rank until you hit 3 years. Rickson Gracie was promoted to red belt a couple years ago, but declined to wear the belt until he hit the commonly-accepted time served requirement. I think this is the way to go.
I received my second-degree promotion several days in advance of the six-year anniversary of my initial black belt promotion. I was in Hawaii and was about to fly back to the mainland, so my professor gave me the promotion in person (which I greatly appreciated). I waited until the six-year anniversary day to update my Beltchecker profile, though.
I think I’ll hold off too. I have another black belt anyways that I’ll wear and then when it’s time I’ll start wearing the one he promoted me on. I just wasn’t sure. I also didn’t wanna disrespect my professor because it was important to him and I don’t wanna take that from him either by refusing the promotion.
